Someone messaged me last month, genuinely frustrated.
He had bought a batch of proxies. Fast ones. Cheap ones. Good ping, clean speed tests, everything looked perfect.
And every single site he pointed them at banned him inside ten minutes.
He assumed he had been sold junk. He hadn't. He just bought the wrong type.
So let's clear this up, because it's the single most common mix-up in the proxy world.
The Short Version
There are two big families of proxy.
Datacenter proxies come from servers. Cloud providers, hosting companies, big racks in a building somewhere.
Residential proxies come from real homes. Real internet providers. The same kind of IP address your phone or laptop is using right now.
That's it. That's the whole difference.
But that one difference changes everything about how websites treat you.
Why Websites Can Tell
Here's the part people miss.
Every IP address on the internet belongs to somebody, and that ownership is public. Anyone can look up which company an IP belongs to.
So when a site sees a request come in, it can check:
- Is this IP owned by a home internet provider?
- Or is it owned by a hosting company?
A regular customer browsing from their sofa has a home IP.
A bot running on a rented server has a datacenter IP.
Sites know this. So do their anti-bot systems.
Which means a datacenter proxy is wearing a name tag that says “I am a server”. On a strict site, that's enough to get shown the door before you've done anything wrong.
Datacenter Proxies: The Honest Pitch
I don't want to make these sound bad. They're brilliant for the right job.
What they're good at:
- Speed. Server connections are fast. Genuinely fast.
- Price. Cheap, often free. Our own free proxy list is mostly this kind.
- Volume. You can get a lot of them without much effort.
Where they fall over:
- Sites with serious bot protection
- Anything involving a login or a checkout
- Social platforms, which are ruthless about this
Use them for: testing, checking how a page looks from another country, scraping open data, general browsing, learning.
Residential Proxies: The Honest Pitch
These look like real people because they come from real people's connections.
What they're good at:
- Blending in. Far harder to spot and block.
- Tough targets. Sites that instantly reject datacenter IPs will often let these through.
- Location accuracy. A residential IP in a city is genuinely in that city.
Where they fall over:
- Cost. Usually priced per gigabyte, and it adds up quickly.
- Speed. You're routed through someone's home connection. It's not a server.
- Ethics. Worth asking where the provider got those IPs, and whether those people knew.
That last point matters more than people admit. Some networks have been built by bundling an exit node into free software. If a provider won't explain their sourcing, that tells you something.
A Quick Story About Getting This Wrong
Years ago I ran a price-checking script across a few retail sites. Datacenter proxies, rotating nicely, all very clever.
Three sites worked fine for weeks.
The fourth banned my entire IP range on day one. Not one IP. The range.
I spent two evenings tuning delays, changing headers, rewriting the request order. Nothing.
Then I tried a single residential IP, no clever tricks at all, and it walked straight through.
Two evenings lost because I was solving the wrong problem. The script was never the issue. The kind of address was.
There's a Third Type Nobody Mentions
Mobile proxies. IPs from phone networks rather than homes or servers.
They're the hardest of the lot to block, and for a slightly unfair reason.
Mobile carriers share one address across huge numbers of customers. Block a mobile IP and you might be blocking a few thousand real people at once. Most sites decide that's not worth it.
So mobile IPs get a level of tolerance the others never see.
The catch is price. They're the most expensive of the three by a wide margin, and unless you're doing something specific with social platforms, you almost certainly don't need them.
I mention them mostly so you recognise the term when a provider tries to upsell you.
So How Do You Choose?
My rule is boringly simple.
Start with datacenter. They're free or cheap, they're fast, and for most tasks they're completely fine. Grab one from the proxy list, test it with our proxy checker, and see how far you get.
Only move to residential when you actually hit a wall. Not because a blog told you they're better. Because you tried the cheap option and the site said no.
Most people never need to make that jump. They think they do because they read that residential is “better”, and then they pay per gigabyte for a task a free proxy would have handled.
Better is relative. A sports car is better than a bicycle right up until you need to cross a footbridge.
One Last Thing
Whichever type you pick, the basics don't change. Prefer HTTPS. Don't log into anything important through a proxy you don't control. And test before you trust, always.
