Free Proxy Server: Common Questions

A proxy server sits between your device and the website you are visiting. Your request goes to the proxy first and the proxy forwards it on, so the destination normally sees the proxy's IP address instead of yours. That is all a proxy does. It does not by itself encrypt your traffic or make you anonymous, and a public proxy is run by someone you do not know, so it should never be trusted with passwords or private data.

Public proxies are useful for testing, basic browsing and checking how a site looks from another country. They are operated by third parties, can log or alter unencrypted traffic, and often stop working without warning. Do not send passwords, payment details, login cookies or anything sensitive through one. Prefer sites that use HTTPS so the proxy cannot read the content, and test a proxy with our proxy checker before you rely on it.

HTTP proxies handle web traffic only, and most public ones cannot tunnel HTTPS at all. HTTPS-capable proxies can carry an encrypted connection through to the destination, but there are very few of them on any free list. SOCKS4 and SOCKS5 work at a lower level and pass any TCP connection, so they also suit mail clients, games and torrent software; SOCKS5 adds authentication and remote DNS. For a browser, start with SOCKS5. Elite proxies are the ones whose headers do not reveal that a proxy is in use.

Pick a proxy located in the country you need and enter its IP and port in your browser or application settings. The site will then see the proxy's location instead of yours. It does not always work: many services block known proxy addresses and also look at account and device signals, not just the IP. You are responsible for following the laws and the terms of the services you use.

Copy the IP and port from the list. In Chrome go to Settings, then System, then Open your computer's proxy settings; in Firefox go to Settings, then Network Settings, then Manual proxy configuration. Enter the address and port in the field for the matching protocol (HTTP or SOCKS). In torrent clients and other software the proxy option is usually under connection settings and expects a SOCKS5 proxy.
